Nicky grew up riding thanks to her very horsey kiwi mother. Her childhood was spent riding ponies and horses around the hills of their sheep and cattle farm in Oberon and competing in eventing, jumping and dressage.
After finishing school Nicky headed to America for a three year stint where she competed on some lovely horses achieving many good results in international competition. In the US she rode her first 3 star, won a young rider CCI 2 star and enjoyed lessons from Bruce Davidson, Phillip Dutton and other leading trainers. It was a period that confirmed her absolute love of the sport. She was also fortunate enough to be an Australian team member at the test event for the Atlanta Olympic Games, which was a great experience.
Returning to Australia to study at university (gaining a Bachelor of Communications), Nicky continued to compete at the 3 star level and was soon placed on the NSWIS squad and remained on the squad on numerous horses in the years to come. After a successful run at Adelaide CCI4* in 2003 she was ultimately long listed for the 2004 Olympic Games on Warrie Hill.
In 2005 Nicky returned to America and based with Phillip Dutton to once again compete on the American circuit, this time taking Warrie Hill with her with the aim of competing at Rolex Kentucky CCI4*. Whilst she unfortunately had to withdraw from Rolex, she competed at 3 star events including Fair Hill CCI3*.
Competing, teaching and training in the USA heightened Nicky’s professionalism in all aspects of management and training.
Nicky has produced many quality performance horses mostly from off the track thoroughbreds; including Hughenden Hill, Henley Hill, Warrie Hill, BHM Tamerlane (sold to the UK and competed as Othello Hill), Saba Hill, Haldon Hill, Carson Hill and also started well known horse such as Fox Hill and Twins Zenith. Spotting potential and talent in young horses and producing them is a passion of Nicky’s.
She has always produced her horses for sale and hopes to be in a position to hang onto the good ones in the future.
Along the way Nicky has ridden track work, jump racers and polo ponies developing an understanding of many equestrian disciplines.
As a coach Nicky has gained her Level 2 Eventing Specialist qualifications and has enjoyed international experience as the Team Coach for the Indonesian Eventing Team at the Asian Games. A role that she shared with Olympians George and Rachael Sanna (who focussed on the Showjumping and Dressage phases). Nicky was asked to help the Team with the Cross Country and competition side of the training and travel with the horses to the games in Qatar.
Nicky also took the team to competitions in Thailand and thoroughly enjoyed her time with the team.
Nicky also worked in Media and Marketing for Equestrian Australia for 4 years.
After having two children and also losing her 3 star horse to soundness problems Nicky is re building a team of young horses and enjoying getting back out to competitions. She is currently campaigning a promising Vivant mare, Viva Hill who is at 1 star level and a TB named Winter Hill who is at 95cm. Also in training she has a nice 4yo homebred gelding by Foxdale Premier (Premier Des Hayettes) and a 3yo off the track.
